A Night of Philanthropy and Celebration
On December 7, 2024, an exceptional gathering of Greeks from across the globe came together at Cipriani Wall Street for The Hellenic Initiative’s (THI) 12th Annual New York Gala. This prestigious event is one of the most highly anticipated in the Greek Diaspora, raising vital funds for humanitarian and economic development programs in Greece.
Each year, the Gala shines a spotlight on those whose contributions have had a transformative impact on Greece and the world. This year, Dean and Marianne Metropoulos were celebrated for their remarkable philanthropic work and dedication to Greece. The couple, who have committed to The Giving Pledge—an initiative by philanthropists promising to give the majority of their wealth to solve pressing global challenges—were honored for their generosity and unwavering support of the Greek people.
Reflecting on the importance of giving, Marianne Metropoulos remarked, "Philanthropy is in our DNA as Greeks—it's a concept that has been part of our culture since ancient times. Dean and I feel it deeply." She also spoke about her film Cliffs of Freedom, which she hopes will inspire future generations, saying, “We wanted to do something that would truly inspire, and we hope our movie will help do that.”
Dean Metropoulos emphasized the role of THI in strengthening Greece’s economy and supporting young professionals, stating, “THI plays a significant role in supporting the economy of Greece and, more importantly, in fostering the initiatives and careers of young professionals who drive Greece’s future with talent and innovation. THI also helps future generations stay connected to their cultural roots and heritage.”
The evening, themed “Dare to Dream,” was a celebration of Greek heritage and philanthropy, featuring a cocktail hour, a seated dinner, and entertainment. Guests were welcomed by THI Board Chairman and Co-Founder Andrew N. Liveris, along with Board President and Co-Founder George P. Stamas. The Gala, which was sold out, welcomed over 800 attendees from the U.S., Canada, the UK, Europe, and Australia, including Gala Co-Chairs John and Joanne Koudounis and Michael G. and Robin Psaros.
In his address, Andrew N. Liveris reflected on THI’s growth, saying, “What began 12 years ago as an effort to stabilize a struggling nation has grown into a mission that contributes to global peace, security, and economic resilience, positioning Greece as an indispensable player on the world stage.” He added that THI is now a movement that stands as a testament to the strength of the Greek people and the power of the global Diaspora.
George P. Stamas echoed this sentiment, saying, “The New York Gala is our largest and most successful global event every year. Not only do we celebrate our incredible community, but we also raise crucial funds for the people of Greece. We are deeply honored to recognize Dean and Marianne for their extraordinary support of THI and Greece.”
The night was further enlivened by a spectacular performance from Greek singer Thanos Petrelis and music by the Jimmy Vali Band. A highlight of the event was the silent auction, where guests had the opportunity to bid on world-class art, jewelry, and unique experiences donated by Greeks worldwide.
The Gala also featured two exclusive events the night before: a special reception for members of the Lord Byron Circle of the 1821 Society, held at the offices of Calamos Investments, and a lively “Networking with a Purpose” gathering for THI’s New Leaders, young professionals and entrepreneurs who represent the future of THI and made up a quarter of the Gala’s attendees.
As the largest Greek Diaspora organization in the world, THI continues to make a significant impact. Since its founding in 2012, THI has raised more than $37 million, supporting sustainable economic recovery and fostering a new generation of business leaders. THI’s programs focus on crisis relief and building entrepreneurial skills to ensure a brighter future for Greece.
The 12th Annual Gala was not only a night of celebration but also a reminder of the power of community, philanthropy, and the enduring spirit of Hellenism.
Founded in 2012, the Hellenic Initiative is a nonprofit, secular organization that mobilizes the Greek diaspora and philhellene community to support sustainable economic recovery and renewal in Greece.
